Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch- 110 years of Birthday

Part 1. Biography.

Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch (Deich) was borne in the night from 31 December 1899 to 1 January 1900 in Reni (Bessarabia) on the Danube River. There is a paper by two collaborators of the Pulkovo Observatory: O.N. Orlova and N.A. Shakht [1], in which the authors tells us about the Deutsch's recollections concerning the small town on the Danube River. According to Deutsch his childhood in Reni was happy and he recollected original music of the orchestra from the town. I have no a complete genealogical three of Deutsch, but one reports that one of his grandmothers was of Romanian origin, while his father was a german, which lived in the Southern Bessarabia from the beggining of the XIX-th century, when Bessarabia has entered to Russian Empire. The family name of his Romanian grandmother was Dovatur, since his very good friend and cousin Aristid I. Dovatur (1897, Reni-1982,St. Petersburg, see [5]), one of the best specialists in the history of Greece and Classical Philology in Sankt - Petersburg , professor of the Sankt-Petersburg University, was borne in the same town. Dovatur was a good speaker of 9 languages: Latin, Greek, other few Latin languages and of the Romanian language, of course.
The main sourse for this article is the Personal File of Alexander N. Deutsch from the Pulkovo Observatory [2], which I have received due to the former Director of the Observatory Viktor K. Abalakin.
His childhood in Reni was not so long, since the File tells us that He entered to Saratov 1-st Gymnasium in 1909 and finished them in 1917 . Then He has spent in Reni 9 years. Meanwhile we could suppose that his recollections about Reni are vivid. An important place in his recollections concerns Danube, the original music played by local musicians as well as the town of Reni itself, its population. During the Csarist period of his life He moved toghether with father from Reni to St-Peterburg, Ryazan and finally Saratov. In Saratov he has finished the 1-st Gimnasium in this City and subsequently has entered to the physics and mathematical department of the Saratov University, while subsequently (in 1921) was transferred to the Sankt-Petersburg University. From his File we could conclude that this time he has combined the learning with duties to Red Army.
I should point that He was not an active soldier of the Red Army, as his father who was an officer first in Csar Army and subsequently in the Red Army, by reasons unknown to me. It is not excluded, that the family of Nikolay Deutsch had more sympathy for Red color, than for White. Unfortunately, the personal File by A.N. Deutsch gives no more information about this controversial period of the biography of the Deutschs. We know also that Saratov is the City on the Volga River, where many germans lived during Soviet times and an Authonomous Soviet German Republic was organized by Josef Stalin. At the same time the Bessarabian germans lived in Bessarabia and Transdniestria since Csar times (more exactly since the beginning and half of the XIX century). They were invited to Bessarabia and Transdniestria to colonize the territories of Bessaraba and Transdniestria. A great number of colonies existed in Transdniestria till 1937, where the percent of germans was about 9%. In 1937 many of the Transdniestrian germans were purged by Ezhov and Beria, so that the percent of germans has reduced to about 2%. In Bessarabia a great numebr of germans lived especially in the South of Bessarabia as agricultural colonists. This part of Bessarabia was known also as Budjak. Here about 80 thousands of germans lived together with Romanians, bulgarians, gagauzes, Hebrews. In august- November 1940 they were evacuated to their homeland – Germany- by an agreement between Shulenburg and Molotov. Alexander was a Calculator at the Union of Consommers in Saratov since September 1918 till may 1919, while after that date a copier and a teacher in the Red Army somewhere in Ural, then in Saratov again and finaly in St-Petersburg . No other details are given in the File [2].

Since 1921 till 1923 Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch was a student of the Astronomical Section of the Mathematical and Mechanic Department of the Petrograde (Sankt-Petersburg) University.

I will reproduce the main informations from His Personal file:
According the File [2] we know also that Alexander was not a member nor of Comsomol, nor of Communist Party, but was a member of Trade Unions since 1923. Deutsch was a good reader of scientific literature from English, German and French languages. He also was a speaker of French language (see also [2]).

The Professional Activity of Deutsch was as follows:
Spt. 1918- May 1919 –Tally keeper in Saratov
May 1919 - December 1922 Clerk and teacher in the Red Army. That time He has finished his courses at the University in Sankt Petersburg. Then He Has combined the Teaching and Learning during the years of Civil War.
1922-1923 Calculator at the State Optical Institute
1923-1926 Calculator at the Pulkovo Observatory
1926-1930 Assistent Professors (Petrograde University)
1930-1935 Scientific Researcher of the I-st Degree
1935-1939 Scientific Specialist
1938-1945 Senior Scientific Researcher

1 Jan 1945 Chief of the Department of the Photographic Astrometry
In 1972 A.N.Deutsch was a Senior Scientific Researcher (pensioned from the administrative work); while in 1974 he was transferred as Senior Scientific researcher-consultant at the Pulkovo Observatory.
In 1944 He had a degree of Doctor of Sciences and a title of Dozent.
At 13 February 1943 He Had received the Degree of Doctor (2-nd Degree in the Soviet Union, while the first is Candidate of Sciences). Dyploma 00026 was delivered on 2 marches 1946.
He received a full Professor title on 8 February 1947 and received the Dyploma of Professor N 15271 on 9 October 1947.
Deutsch has made a number of trips abroad in view of scientific research. So, He has visited:
Sweden in 1927 (During this trip Deutsch participated in the observation of an Eclipse of the Sun from June 1927. The observations were made in Malberget)
Romania in 1954, 1957, 1961
China in 1956 and 1965
USA in 1961
Czechoslovakia in 1964
Federal Republic of Germany in 1964 (scientific tourist)
Belgium in 1966
France in 1969 (scientific tourist)
Chile and Brazil in 1970
France in 1972 (scientific tourism)
Poland in 1973 (scientific tourism)
A.N. Deutsch has the following decorations:
[i]The Order of Sign of Honour (twice, first on 10 June 1945)
The Medal of Defense of Leningrad
The Medal of Valorous Work
The Medal of 250 years of Leningrad
The order of Labour red banner
The Order of Lenin
The Medal Veteran of Work (1979)
One of the great merits of Deutsch was the participation in the Defense of Leningrad during the Blocade (1941-1943). Particularly He saved from destruction the Glass Library of the Pulkovo Observatory. We should mention that, since 1938 he was one of the Directors-adjoint of the Pulkovo Observatory, while during the Blocade (since 20 September 1941 till 20 February 1943) Deutsch was the Director of the Pulkovo Observatory. The contribution by Deutsch in the defense of the Observatory is mentioned in few books, concerning the Blocade of Leningrad by German troops. In 1943-1945 A.N. Deutsch was evacuated together with other scientists from Sankt Petersburg to Tashkent, where he taught the course of astronomy at the Pedagogical Institute in Tashkent and subsequently at the University of Tashkent (1944-1945). During the war Deutsch was an active propagandist and popularizatror of astronomy. Particulary, He has invented a new method of determnination of coordinates for warships.
Deutsch took part in the observations of the total eclipses of the Sun in 1936 (Omsk) and 1945.
Acording the same file A.N. Deutsch was a reserve captain of the Soviet Army after the finish of the 2-nd World War. He had 2 children (see, also [2])
The personal file of A.N. Deutsch contains also an authobiography, few documents sign ed by authorities of the Pulkovo Observatory, such as Director –adjoint, corr.-member of the AS of the USSR M.S. Zverev, Corr-member of the AS of the USSR D.Maksutov, director of the Observatory, professor V.A. Krat, the chief of the Crimean group of the Institute for Theoretical Astronomy N.S. Chernykh, and other.

Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch has died on 22 November 1986.
The scientific dead by A.N.Deutsch (Deich) will be examined in the 2-nd part of the article.

Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch was a complex astronomer with contributions in a large area of subjects. In this part I shall review His scientific contribution based on his File from the Pulkovo Observatory as well as on the Astrophysics Data System Database of NASA.
The last contains 39 papers of the Pulkovo astronomer as Deich, A.N. published mainly after 1936 and about 40 papers as Deutsch, A.N. , published mainly before this year. It is to mention that the family name Deutsch is proper also to a well known american astronomer Armin J. Deutsch. Then it is important to distinguish between these two persons.
The total number of papers by Alexander Deutsch is 121, according to the list in the File [2].

I should mention that there few inconsistencies betwen the list of papers at the ADS and the list of papers completed by the author in 1972 subsequently completed on 30 april 1976 and again added on 23 January1976. For example the article :

Deutsch, A. N.
New intergalactic globular cluster? can not be unumbiguously attributed to Alexander Nikolaevich, in spite of this article is published in the Russian Journal Astron. Tsirk. It is more probabale that this is an article by the Soviet astronomer, but the oppozite is not also excluded.

As well, the total number of papers by A.N. Deutsch (Deich) is under discussion: some of the papers at the ADS absent in his list (7 papers), while other from his list absent at ADS (much more than 7). In fact the number of papers at ADS is less since it encomprise the translations also, while the list by A.N. Deutsch include the originals allmost. Then it is not se easy to calculate the total number of papers by Deutsch. I hope that the list below will complete essentially the ADS database.

I shall write here papers absenting in the ADS database.
The numberinjg in the parantheses agree with the number in the File [2].

: 18, 2010 7:08 pm     : CONCLUDING REMARKS

Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch complete the number of great astronomers borne in Bessarabia:
1) Donitch
2) Albitzky
3) Nadolschi
4) Cristescu
5) Grebenikov
6) Kondurar

Due to some difficulties we do not still know abouth the origin of one of the collaborators of N.N. Donitch- L.A. Ocoulitch. It is not excluded, that he was also borne in Bessarabia.

In the connection with this it could be very ussefull to drew more attention to this area of interests. Particularly, I would like to propose to create in Dubasarii Vechi, at the ownership of N. N. Donitch, a museum of History of Astronomy, where an important place will concerns the photographs, biographical materials on the mentioned astronomers. As the first step it will be very important to reconstruct the Tower of the Observatory of Donitch destroyed by Red Army in 1944 as well as to repair His house, which is actually in a very bad state.
Why the House by Rally in Dolna, which was visited by A.S. Pushkin, is receiving so much attention, while the house by N.N. Donitch is under disparition?
The authorities of Moldova, particularly the minister of Tourism and Culture as well as the Academy of Sciences should understand, that the preservation of the cultural and scientific places in Bessarabia is of first order importance. No concrete steps from that institutions follow, nor during Communist governement, nor even during the democratic rule.
The place in Dubassarii Vechi is very good from the turistic point of view and the completion of the ownership of Donitch by a planetarium will be very attractive for many people. The forest and the Dniester river represents another attractive points.

I have given a part of the photographs from the archive of Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch (Deich) to the Director of the Museum of History of the Republic of Moldova in view of their preservation and future exposition with various ocasions.
Another photo, which represents Alexander Nikolaevich with his great Maksutov telescope in Pulkovo was posted on the website:

I would like to send a best wish to Pulkovo astronomers, where the most important part of the scientific personal are disciples of Alexander Nikolaevich. I hope, that the Pulkovo astronomers, disciples by A.N. Deutsch(Deich) will not forget Bessarabia as a whole, which consists not only from the Budjak, but also from a part of the Republic of Moldova North from Reni, including Chisinau, Northern Bessarabia and other interesting zones.

The same will reffer to the friends and disciples by Aristid Ivanovich Dovatur, his very good freind and nearer. It is so strange, that the contacts between classic phylologists from Sankt Petersburg and that from Chisinau are so week.
Let's hope for more better acquaintance and contacts!

: 15, 2010 8:08 pm     : About A.N. Deutsch (Deich) in Moldova

It is interesting, that Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch was a referee of the doctoral dissertation of Vladimir Alexandrovich Albitzky (1892-1951), which was born in Chisinau. The File [1] contains the review of Deich on the dissertation by Albitzky. It is also interesting to know, that Albitzky and the founder of modern astronomy in Bessarabia Nicholas Donitch were friendly, since they meat in Odessa, during the first years of the World War I, when Odessa was under the white rule.
It is of course interesting also that Deich was one of the most important astronomers in Saint Petersburg, the Nortrhern capitol city of Russia, where Donitch has spent his youth. This confirms again that the policy is one of the important factors on science. Better Policy- better scientific results.

Few publications about Alexander Nikolaevich Deutsch (Deich) are available in the Republic of Moldova:

Алекс, спасибо за земляка! К нему следует присоединить и Доватора - историка классической филологии.Пулковская обсерватория особо пострадала в 1937г. Мне всегда казалось, что Ленинград особо выделялся реакционностью властей - Жданов, Толстиков, Романов...
